“We were very transparent about all of this and the biggest reason was because we want to make sure people have a chance to do their own research,” Kogan explained to MMAWeekly.

From Fightline.com:

Lawal tested positive for anabolic steroid, Drostanolone after his Strikeforce victory over Lorenz Larkin earlier in January, prompting Kogan to speak out about the unusual circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to Kogan, Lawal was taking a commercial supplement called S-Mass Lean which contained the banned substance—something the pair claims to have been unaware of. The longtime manager calls for better regulation of supplements and increased awareness to prevent similar instances.

“The problem is that these materials and this research and information usually becomes available retroactively, not proactively, not ahead of time,” said Kogan. “Can this be prevented? Yes, it can be prevented by regulation through the FDA. But then they have to take on the big lobbying group of the nutrition companies.”

Santos was suspended after failing a drug test that led to the removal of her title, according to reports from Sports Illustrated.

From Mma.sbnation.com:

“Cyborg” tested positive for the banned substance stanozolol, an anabolic steroid, in the aftermath of her December 17th title defense against Hiroko Yamanaka at Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal. The 26-year-old promptly received a $2,500 fine, a one-year suspension and the win was reversed to a “no decision.”

“I would like to sincerely apologize to Strikeforce, the Zuffa organization, Hioko Yamanaka and my fans for my failed drug test,” Santos said after the ruling. “I am ultimately responsible for everything I put in my body, and at the end of the day, there is no excuse for having a prohibited substance in my system.”

Despite her expression of regret, Santos has thus far maintained her innocence, stating that the failed test resulted from “a dietary supplement that I was assured was safe and not prohibited from use in sports competition.”

“She’s at home in Curitiba, surrounded by family who supports her wholeheartedly,” the fighter’s manager explained. “She’s recalibrating and trying to put her head around the suspension.”

The test happened on Dec. 16, the day before she knocked out the top contender for the title, Japan’s Hiroko Yamanaka, in only 16 seconds.

The goal of Jellybean, which began in 2005, was to disrupt the sale of cocaine, marijuana, prescription drugs and anabolic steroids in New Brunswick.

Defence lawyer Howard Peters said Friday his client, who pleaded guilty, was only involved in selling anabolic steroids and was at the lower end of the scale in the conspiracy.

Peters said Moore was buying steroids for personal use and for sale in his gym in Glace Bay, N.S., and wasn’t selling in his community in general.

From Cupwire.ca:

Renière’s adverse result came out of testing conducted by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) at the Carabins’ training camp Aug. 23. Renière has waived his right to an appeal.

“I admit to having consumed dietary supplements purchased on the internet from the United States in an attempt to save money, and I was well aware of the risk of contamination associated with purchases of this sort and that the Carabins medical team was opposed to players taking dietary supplements,” Renière said in a statement.

“The substance detected by the CCES did not appear on the list of ingredients indicated on these supplements. I deeply regret my decision, and I’m now paying a much higher price by being deprived of playing a sport that has been my passion for years.”

Renière tested positive for 19-norandrosterone, which contains nandrolone, an anabolic steroid.

A serious threat to world sport was posed recently after 109 footballers taking part in this summer’s Under-17 World Cup tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid clenbuterol after eating contaminated meat.

The “compelling evidence” that tainted meat was to blame meant no action was taken against any of the affected players by FIFA and the WADA but this seems like a bias as 22 year-old British sprint hurdler Callum Priestley, who is serving a two-year ban after testing positive for clenbuterol while on an official UK Athletics training camp in South Africa in 2010 was accused for failing to prove his innocence.

From Blogs.telegraph.co.uk:

His claims that he had eaten contaminated meat at the UK Athletics hotel, and that he was even treated for food poisoning at the time of his drug test, failed to carry any weight with his disciplinary panel and his punishment was confirmed.

Although his ban expires in February, Priestley, once considered one of Britain’s brightest young track prospects, is so disillusioned by his experience that he has now quit the sport.

Michele Verokken, the former head of anti-doping in Britain, is convinced he was innocent though whether he was really telling the truth we will never be known for sure because once the meat was consumed, the evidence vanished.

In interest of sports, it would be good if countries where there is a proven problem are barred from hosting any major international sporting events until they can correct things at their end.
