Painkiller expert worried about prescription drug abuse
The National Survey of Alcohol and Drug Use by College Athletes said 75 percent of college athletes utilized several kinds of painkiller medicine for sports-related traumas. That was in 1991, before illicit online acquisition of drugs was a leading problem.
Marcus Amos, an expert on painkiller, worries about college football players becoming dependent to prescription analgesics, and worse.
155 people or organizations have acquired funds from the NCAA’s Health and Safety Speakers Grant. There are experts on issues including steroid misuse, anger management, hazing, and date rape. Nevertheless, according to the Georgia based counselor, steroids, and prescription painkillers are still uncontrolled.
Finding an audience to listen to his educational lectures is a real problem. Another problem are those individuals who invite him to talk but thinks he will try to direct the fault at individuals who would or do prescribe medication such as trainers and physicians.
Amos believes that the misuse of prescription painkillers ranging from Vicodin and Percocet to the much more powerful OxyContin is spreading and is out of official control.
He is not especially concerned about painkillers injected into college football players before, during, and after games, though he thinks, overuse might head to a dependency on stronger painkillers.

“I can almost promise you at any major university, you have guys who have access to stuff that would make you flip,” Amos said. “These guys are just so crafty. And the craftiest individuals are addicts.”
