MLB prospect tested positive for steroids, identity still unknown

MLB prospect tested positive for steroids, identity still unknownA Major League prospect who recently signed an $850,000 contract with the Yankees was found to test positive for stanozolol, a derivative of testosterone.

Stanzolol, commonly sold under the Winstrol, is one of the substances banned in sports competition. Many sporting bodies such as the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) prohibit the use of this substance.

After signing a contract with the Yankees, he underwent a DNA test and a drug test in July. His DNA results revealed that he misrepresented his age, which he previously claimed as 16-years old.

Furthermore, Major League officials discovered that his real name was not Damian Arredondo. An MLB spokesperson was asked last Wednesday if the real identity of the player was already known, but he declined to comment.

Many fellow Dominican prospects have been suspended over the last two years due to failed drug tests, but this is the first time that a prospect misrepresented his name.

He is prohibited from signing with another Major League team for a year. If he wants to be eligible to play under his real name, then he has to serve the 50-game suspension handed to him for his positive steroid test.

From The New York Times:

The Yankees believed that was his name when they signed him as a 16-year-old in July — before his DNA was checked and he was tested for performance-enhancing drugs.
