Are steroids really harmful?
Every sportsperson invariably dreams of going that extra mile for his team. A young lasso wants to pump up to look her best at the beach. Bodybuilders don’t want to leave even a single stone unturned to enhance their musculature and acquire the best form they can.The answer to all of these and more lies in just one word, which has converted the world into a ‘rage’ today called ‘steroids’, popularly termed as ‘roids’.
However despite their varied use for myriad purposes, steroids have also been spoken to cause lethal side effects on its users. But before you go ahead towards believing these hearsays, you must really flex the muscle between your ears.
Anabolic Steroids, ‘juices’ as they are also popularly called, are artificial hormones that behave like testosterone to bring about the desired changes in the human body.
The notion that anabolic steroids are dangerous drugs as to warrant militaristic government enforcement tactics is, however surprisingly controversial. Also the mounting research strongly indicates that the actual health risks have been overstated to the public.
For instance, a landmark 1996 study has been released that virtually talks about no adverse effects of anabolic steroids when they were administered at a dosage of 600 mgs per week which indeed makes for six times the natural replacement dose. The risk levels are also associated with a number of factors such as duration of administration, the types of compounds taken, existence of pathologies etc.
The results that one gets to see are truly tempting, side effects come in when the person stays unaware of the health risks involved in self administration of these drugs. Besides, without regular supervision under the doctor, some side effects of these steroids might go unnoticed or untreated until it is too late. This stands true particularly for teenagers, who are more likely to abuse them than the adults, by taking them in dangerously high dosages.
