Steroid-influenced bodybuilding could lead to kidney damage

The use of anabolic steroids by athletes for gaining muscle mass and strength could destroy their kidney function.

This finding was disclosed in a paper being presented at the American Society of Nephrology’s 42nd Annual Meeting and Scientific Exposition in San Diego, CA.

From Sciencedaily.com:

Reports of professional athletes who abuse anabolic steroids are increasingly common. Most people know that using steroids is not good for your health, but until now, their effects on the kidneys have not been known. Leal Herlitz, MD (Columbia University Medical Center) and her colleagues recently conducted the first study describing injury to the kidneys following long-term abuse of anabolic steroids. The investigators studied a group of 10 bodybuilders who used steroids for many years and developed protein leakage into the urine and severe reductions in kidney function. Kidney tests revealed that nine of the ten bodybuilders developed a condition called focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a type of scarring within the kidneys. This disease typically occurs when the kidneys are overworked. The kidney damage in the bodybuilders has similarities to that seen in morbidly obese patients, but appears to be even more severe.

The finding suggested that habitual use of steroids has serious harmful effects on the kidneys that were not previously recognized.

Game-day testing introduced by NFL

According to a NFL official, the league will drug test for steroids on game days. The official said he expects the testing to begin with the first week of the season as agreed to under the league’s new collective bargaining agreement.

The league will use the game-day testing only for performance-enhancers and not for recreational drugs like cocaine and marijuana, according to Adolpho Birch, the NFL’s senior vice president of law and labor policy.

From Torontosun.com:

The new 10-year CBA that was hammered out during the NFL’s more than four- month lockout includes blood testing for human growth hormone, the first such test in any of the country’s major sports.

Details are still being hashed out, but Birch said the program is all but finalized at this point.

“The framework of the testing procedures, I think both sides would agree, is largely agreed to and I don’t expect that there will be much more need to discuss those,” he said.

As for game-day testing, Birch said the NFL has avoided it in the past because of the logistics involved.

“But we have now developed a solution that will allow us to do game-day testing in a way that is not overly disruptive to the clubs and respects the game-day process and all of the things going on,” he said.

“This is primarily a competitive issue, so we do not contemplate utilizing it for the substances-of-abuse recreational drugs,” Birch said during a conference call. “But it is something that will involve any of the potential testing we do under the steroid policy.”

Qualified Information on Testosterone Suspension

If you are looking for a premium quality injectable anabolic androgenic steroid to enhance performance in as short as four to six weeks, testosterone suspension is one of the best performance enhancing drugs for you.

This anabolic steroid is an injectable preparation containing testosterone in a water base. Administration of this steroid leads to an elevated release of testosterone for a period of 2-3 days. The fact that this derivative of testosterone does not leave circulation in a matter of hours means that professional sportsmen placing their trust on it will never be left disappointed.

In the world of professional sports, especially body building and strength athletics, Testosterone suspension is considered by many as the most potent and extremely effective mass agent and is even hailed by sport coaches as the most powerful of all available injectable steroids. Use of this steroid leads to dramatic muscle mass and stamina improvements. Since benefits from use of testosterone suspension are extremely quick, when taken in an injectable form, sportsmen looking for a distinctive edge can expected greater benefits like they can expect with oil based (esterified) preparation.

The most popular practice with Testosterone suspension is to inject it daily with an average dose of 50-200 mg per day for men. Use of this anabolic steroid can lead to gynecomastia and water retention, which can develop very quickly during a steroid cycle. Therefore, use of antiestrogens such as Clomid or Nolvadex is highly recommended just before end of the steroid cycle.

County doctor and two others charged in steroids conspiracy

Three men accused of sale of steroids have pleaded not guilty on August 10, 2011 to federal drug charges.

According to an FBI affidavit that lays out the allegations, Dr. Mark Peter Koch bought anabolic steroids from a satellite technician from north Alabama from August 2005 until June of this year and then sold them to 2 Monroe County men.

From Blog.al.com:

Those are Frisco City resident Bennie Joe Wiggins, who pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and attempted possession with intent to distribute steroids, and Monroeville resident Terry Duwayne Faulk, who was charged in a separate action with concealing information about steroids.

Faulk has waived arraignment, and prosecutors have agreed to recommend a pretrial diversion program that would offer the chance for the charge to be dismissed.

FBI agents on June 28 seized about 38 grams of steroids from Koch, who is accused of both using and selling the performance-enhancing drugs. The affidavit alleges that an informant saw or participated in at least 8 steroids purchases involving Koch. Investigators estimated the total amount of steroids purchased by Koch at more than 300 grams.

Koch transported the drugs in a portable safe that he stored in the Monroe town of Excel, according to the criminal complaint.

As per the affidavit, Faulk gave the courier — identified in court documents as a “confidential human source” — $1,060 on June 24 to purchase steroids.

Game-day testing will not be disruptive, says Birch

Adolpho Birch, who oversees the NFL’s drug-testing program, is confident that game-day testing that can take place before or after games would not be disruptive to teams.

Birch has provided a solution for a concern among players and coaches with the statement.

From NYtimes.com:

Birch said he did not believe H.G.H. is used by 10 to 20 percent of players, as some players have publicly guessed.

He declined to reveal if discussions with the players union had already begun to resolve the final details of growth hormone testing. But he played down concerns about the reliability of tests — concerns that players raised the day before the deal was completed last week — and he said that the N.F.L. hoped eventually to have a test that will expand the detection window for H.G.H.

Birch said game-day testing would be limited to performance enhancing drugs like steroids and human growth hormone, and would not include recreational drugs, such as marijuana and cocaine.

Gautam Gambhir wants action against dope offenders

Indian cricket’s prolific opener, Gautam Gambhir, has expressed his concern about the growing doping menace that has affected the country’s sporting fraternity in the past few days.

Doping in any sport is a concern. What is illegal is illegal. Action should be taken against any sportsperson who is found guilty of doping. Even if a cricketer is also found guilty of taking banned substances, action must be taken against him as well,” said Gambhir.

From Sports.ndtv.com:

Asian Games double gold medallist Ashwini Akkunji, her 4×400 relay gold-winning teammates Mandeep Kaur and Sini Jose, Jauna Murmu, Tiana Mary Thomas and Priyanka Panwar were the quarter-milers who have flunked dope tests.

Besides, long jumper Hari Krishnan Muralidharan and shot putter Sonia were also found to have tested positive. Some of the famous cricketing personalities who were caught for doping include Sri Lanka’s Upul Tharanga, Shane Warne of Australia and Pakistan’s Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif to name a few.

The comments of Gambhir came in wake of eight athletes testing positive for anabolic steroids in the last few days.
