Two more added to steroid list of Indian athletes

Ashwini Akkunji, double gold medalist at last year’s Guangzhou Asiad, and Priyanka Pawar, a 400m runner, have tested positive.

Both the Indian athletes tested positive for the banned methandienone, an anabolic steroid.

From Hindustantimes.com:

Ashwini’s case is more disappointing. She not only had done the country and herself proud by picking up a second gold in the 400m hurdles in China, she was part of the gold-winning 4×400m team in the Commonwealth Games (CWG).

Mandeep and she were among the athletes who had given the country, shamed and angered by a string of scandals in the build-up to the Delhi Games, a reason to cheer. They were the heroes who won India its pride back.

Mandeep Kaur and Sini Jose, who, with Ashwini, were part of the team that won 4×400m gold at Guangzhou, were caught for doping last week.

Women Athletes from India on steroids

Over five female athletes from the Indian national team that brought laurels for the country have been accused of doping.

Sini Jose, Mandeep Kaur, Jauna Murmu, Tiana Mary Thomas, Hari Krishnan, and Sonia were those accused.

From Desiblitz.com:

The drugs taken by the athletes were performance enhancement drugs which have to be taken over a period of time. So, it is very likely the women concerned knew what they were doing and taking. This does not rule out the coaches and support staff of not being aware of what the women were administering because of the time factor involved for the drugs to work.

Taking the steroids before a performance would not give any results as confirmed by Dr. PSM Chandran, the president of the Indian Federation of Sports Medicine. He said: “Unless the athletes are fully aware, they cannot take these anabolic steroids because they have to be taken in proper measures and a cycle has to be followed. Only then will they give results.”

All these athletes returned positive for anabolic steroids in their ‘A’ samples that were collected by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) during the Bangalore tournament.

Barry Bonds lied to save reputation

Prosecutors finished their closing argument in the perjury trial of Barry Bonds, the former baseball player and the home run King, by painting him as a slippery superstar.

Prosecutors said Bonds lied to hide his use of performance enhancing drugs while he closed in on the game’s all-time home run record.

From Reuters.com:

Nedrow said witnesses’ testimony, documents, a secret recording, drug bottles and syringes show Bonds lied to protect his reputation, recklessly thwarting a grand jury investigation into the Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative (BALCO).

The government agreed not to hold him accountable for his 2003 grand jury testimony — unless he lied.

“Why would the defendant testify falsely after getting immunity?” Nedrow asked. “The reason was a secret and it was a powerful secret and it was that he had been using anabolic steroids and human growth hormones. He had concern that it would taint his accomplishments.”

Bonds’ attorneys planned to deliver their closing argument on Thursday with jury deliberations set to begin as early as Friday in the highest profile U.S. case involving sports and performance-enhancing drugs.

“All he had to do was tell the truth,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Nedrow said before a packed courtroom. “He chose not to tell the truth and that’s why he’s here.”

Former Olympic weightlifter accuses Coach

Christos Konstantinidis, the former Olympic weightlifter, has accused suspended national coach Christos Iacovou of giving banned substances to athletes.

The weightlifter represented Greece at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and was providing evidence to a judicial investigation set up to look into a recent doping scandal in which 11 members of the 14-member national weightlifting team tested positive for the anabolic steroid methyltrienolone.

From Reuters.com:

“The former athlete told the prosecutor that Iacovou had urged him to take banned substances and that when he refused he found himself off the national team,” the official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Konstantinidis made identical claims in 1997 but was then forced to sign an apology for fear of losing his job with the police.

The court official said Konstantinidis told the prosecutor that despite signing the apology 11 years ago, he had never retracted his comments.

“He stood by what he had said in 1997 and he repeated those claims today again,” the official said.

Nikos Kourtidis, one of the three weightlifters who did not test positive said, however, he did not believe that Iacovou would give steroids to his athletes.

Konstantinidis told prosecutor Andreas Karaflos that Iacovou had pressed him to take banned substances in 1997.

Drug testing and arrests in news on CFL season eve

Yonus Davis, the electrifying return specialist of the B.C. Lions, had 27 kilograms of ecstasy delivered to a home he was renting in California on April 9.

The return specialist was charged with one felony count of attempting to possess a controlled substance with intent for distributing; he now faces a possible jail sentence of twenty years.

From Montrealgazette.com:

In the season the Canadian Football League’s new drug-testing policy kicks in for real, the league has been hit by unwanted headlines concerning illegal substances.

Commissioner Mark Cohon is convinced the steps the league and CFLPA have taken in tandem are going to be major deterrents to any CFL player thinking of starting to use, or continuing to use, performance-enhancing drugs.

“I don’t think we have an issue that’s ubiquitous,” replied the commissioner Wednesday at McMahon Stadium, as media personnel scrambled for dictionaries. “The fact that 25 per cent of our players will be tested this year and then it gradually moves up from there is right for our league.

Jordan Matechuk, the Hamilton long-snapper, was arrested eight days ago for trying to carry drugs — 543 anabolic steroid pills, 262 milliliters of liquid anabolic steroids and 1.25 grams of marijuana, to be precise — into the country through Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Pharmacy raid reasons revealed

The Florida Department of Health has disclosed why the Treasure Coast Specialty Pharmacy, Inc. was raided.

The pharmacy, between October 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011, dispensed “excessive and inappropriate quantities of anabolic-androgenic steroids, a Schedule III controlled substance, oxycodone, a Schedule II controlled substance and a human grown hormone (HGH), which is not a controlled substance but is subject to abuse.”

From Hrt-rx.com:

Treasure Coast is one of the nation’s largest suppliers of compounded HRT drugs, including testosterone gels, injections, and sublingual medications. They offer a large selection of other hormonal medications as well, though it is unclear if the sale of any of these was cause for the raid. It is also unclear what effect this will have on the operations of Treasure Coast, or the many patients that receive their medications from them.  At this time, we are being told than no arrests have been made, and the DEA was there gathering evidence. Florida news outlets have not mentioned their sale of HRT drugs, and have only loosely speculated it may involve the Schedule II painkiller oxycodone.

A news release from the state labeled the pharmacy as one of the largest steroid suppliers in the United States.

Acquitted police officer denies charges of steroids

A West Yorkshire police officer and former Mr. Gay UK, has denied a drug offence alleging possession of an anabolic steroid.

Pc Mark Carter pleaded not guilty at Leeds Crown Court to a charge of the possession of 277 tablets of a class C controlled drug Stanozolol on December 19, 2009.

From Yorkshirepost.co.uk:

The jury failed to reach a verdict on another sexual assault charge also alleged to have happened on the same night out, but the prosecution was given a week to consider whether there should be a retrial.

Sarah Wright, prosecuting, yesterday told the court a decision had now been made to offer no further evidence on that charge and the officer was formally found not guilty.

A trial date on the drugs allegation was fixed for December 1.

The court was told the defense will argue it is not illegal to have the drug if it is in a medicinal product.

The disgraced police officer was also acquitted on two charges of raping another man afterwards at a hotel in the wee hours.
