According to a report released by the MLB and the players’ union, 105 exemptions were granted by Major League Baseball for otherwise-banned stimulants in the past year because of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, virtually unchanged from the previous year’s total.
The ADHD figure has stayed about the same for four years.
From NZHerald.com.nz:
“My reaction is the same as last year and the year before that,” said Dr Gary Wadler, chairman of the committee that determines the banned substances list for the World Anti-Doping Agency. “It seems to me almost incomprehensible that ADHD is so pervasive in baseball to a degree that it requires medicine.”
A frequent critic of baseball’s drug-testing programme, Wadler said “these numbers really cry out for transparency in the process in baseball – a good look-see at the process, not just the numbers”.
There were just two positive tests for steroids in the second full year of the sport’s toughened drug programme, said Dr Bryan Smith, MLB’s independent drug-testing administrator.
Cincinnati pitcher Edinson Volquez and Florida catcher Ronny Paulino were suspended for 50 games each. Without saying who tested positive for what, Smith identified the substances as Clomiphene and Oxandrolone.
The level of ADHD among young males is higher than for the general population, according to baseball management.

Jan Molenaar, the gunman, may soon find more trouble coming his way as tests of body fluids taking during autopsy will soon be revealed to the world.
Reports have linked Molenaar, the body builder, to steroid use but the same has been vehemently denied by his brother, Peter.
From NZherald.co.nz:
Anabolic steroids are related to the hormone testosterone. Steroids are used in medicine to stimulate bone growth and appetite, induce male puberty and treat chronic wasting conditions such as cancer and Aids.
They are banned by all major sports bodies because their use is considered cheating due to their potential to artificially boost strength.
Abuse of steroids has been linked to harmful physical side-effects such as raised blood pressure and cholesterol and coronary disease. The few long-term studies of psychiatric effects indicate side-effects including raised aggression and mood swings.
The deaths of Texas college gridiron player Taylor Hooton, who committed suicide, and Canadian wrestler Chris Benoit, who murdered his wife and 7-year-old son in Georgia, USA, before killing himself, have fuelled debate about the propensity of steroids to prompt violent irrational behaviour.
Violence and temper outbursts have been linked with steroid abuse and are colloquially referred to as “roid rage“.

Laval Police has issued a warning to every one in the general public who has purchased steroids from the black market after a clandestine lab was found dealing in many products made in filthy conditions.
The Police authorities said that any one who has bought a product identified with the label Sun labs should dispose them off immediately and seek medical consultation in case the product has already been used.
From Montrealgazette.com:
“What they found on the main floor were large bags of powders and jugs of liquids. Some were labelled, others weren’t,” Laval police Constable Nathalie Lorrain said.
After obtaining a search warrant, investigators found 200 vials ready for sale containing a liquid labelled as an anabolic steroid. A small vial of growth hormone was also seized, along with pills, more than 9,000 empty vials, a machine used to seal them and a machine to make pills. Labels from what is believed to be a fictitious pharmaceutical company were also found.
“The worst thing was that the liquid we found, which could be injected, was made in very dirty conditions. All the pots and bottles we found were very dirty,” Lorrain said.
“Also, there were so many powders and chemicals that we can’t identify them. We have to wait for Health Canada to analyze them. We think there could be a lot of chemicals that are bad for your health.
The discovery was made after patrol officers received a call about a break-in about a home on Leandre Descotes St.

Alex Rodriguez, one of the most famous sportsmen in America, has been embroiled in a drug scandal. The star player for the New York Yankees has been accused of testing positive for steroid abuse.
Rodriguez, known for slugging home runs and rumors that he was recently dating Madonna, has been accused for testing positive for steroid abuse in 2003 in a series of drug tests carried out then, the results of which had been kept secret.
From Guardian.co.uk:
Sports Illustrated’s story claims that four different sources have confirmed that Rodriguez tested positive for steroids, along with 104 other baseball players who were also caught in the sweep but whose names were not revealed. Asked by the magazine if the allegations were true, Rodriguez declined to comment. “I’m not saying anything,” he said.
If true, the revelations will damage a sport that prides itself on being “America’s pastime” and has a special place in the national psyche. It will also be a blow to one of the game’s most talented players, who is widely expected to one day be the best-ever home-run hitter.
At the time the tests were carried out there were no penalties for a positive result, though steroids had been banned in baseball since 1991. The tests were done in secret in order to gather evidence to see whether mandatory testing needed to be introduced into the game.
However, the list of players who got positive results later became part of a court case when an illegal steroid ring in the sport was busted by the police. The list is still in a sealed court document, but Sports Illustrated said it had spoken to four people who knew its contents.
It is worth noting here that A-Rod was not on George Mitchell’s list, but many top players have come under suspicion over the years, most notably Barry Bonds.

The INTERPOL and the World Health Organization’s International Medical Products Anti-Counterfeiting Taskforce (IMPACT) recently coordinated to inhibit the supply of illegal and dangerous medicines by launching Operation Pangea II.
Aimed at highlighting the dangers of buying drugs online, the initiative lasted for a week and led to a series of arrests and seizure of thousands of potentially harmful medical products.
From News-Medical.Net:
During the operation, Internet monitoring revealed 751 websites engaged in illegal activity, including offering controlled or prescription only drugs, 72 of which have now been taken down. In addition, more than 16,000 packages were inspected by regulators and customs, 995 packages were seized and nearly 167,000 illicit and counterfeit pills – including antibiotics, steroids and slimming pills, confiscated.
Twenty-two individuals are currently under investigation for a range of crimes including illegally selling and supplying unlicensed or prescription-only medicines.
“As the very positive results of this global effort are made public, INTERPOL and its member countries will prove again that the Internet is not an anonymous safe haven for those who use it for criminal purposes. We hope that by raising public awareness about the dangers of illegal internet pharmacies, consumers will exercise greater care when purchasing medicines on the Internet,” added Secretary General Noble.
“Our thanks go to the police, customs and regulatory officials in the 24 participating countries as well as to our partner international organizations such as the World Health Organization’s IMPACT, the World Customs Organization and Universal Postal Union whose tireless efforts and dedication have made Operation Pangea II such a success,” Noble concluded.
The operation received significant support from the Permanent Forum on International Pharmaceutical Crime (PFIPC) the World Customs Organization, the UK’s Medicines and Health Care products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Health Canada.

Emory University researchers have disclosed that administration of progesterone to victims with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) shortly after the injury can reduce the chances of death and degree of disability to a considerable extent.
The research was published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine.
From News-medical.net:
As the results were so impressive, the research team felt it was time to take the treatment to the bedside for testing in patients who had suffered a serious brain injury.
It is estimated that 1.5 to 2 million people in the U.S. sustain a TBI each year, leading to 50,000 deaths and 80,000 new cases of long-term disability.
It is also a major cause of death and disability among children and military personnel.
Despite the enormity of the problem, scientists have failed to identify effective medications to improve outcomes following a TBI and no new medical therapies have been developed for traumatic brain injuries in over 30 years.
Although it is classed as a “sex steroid,” progesterone is also a neurosteroid that exerts protective effects on human tissue.
It is naturally present in small but measurable amounts in the brains of males and females.
It was revealed by the researchers that progesterone treatment for TBI has been extensively studied in laboratory animals for more than fifteen years and was found to be effective.
