Former teammate of Armstrong testifies before jury

The former cycling teammate of Lance Armstrong, Yaroslav Popovych, recently testified before a federal grand jury in Los Angeles on Wednesday for 90 minutes as per his Kenneth Miller.

Lance Armstrong has been accused of engaging into blood doping by Floyd Landis, his former teammate.

From Articles.latimes.com:

Popovych, a 30-year-old from Ukraine who rode with Armstrong on teams sponsored by Discovery Channel, Astana and RadioShack, was served with a subpoena after participating in a charity ride in Austin, Texas, for Armstrong’s cancer foundation, Livestrong.

“How he was served struck me as a little peculiar,” Miller said. “It was effected on a guy at a charity ride who was going to leave Texas for a vacation with his girlfriend, a guy from Ukraine who doesn’t speak great English and didn’t really understand what was going on.”

Miller said Popovych told him somebody walked up to him as he was leaving an autograph-signing event at a bicycle shop in Austin and followed him to his hotel. Miller also said that Popovych was told Wednesday that he is not a target of the investigation

Popovych had planned to stay in the U.S. only for four days but “they forced him to be here,” Miller said, referring to those who served the subpoena.

Among others who have testified are exercise physiologist Allen Lim, who has worked with several cycling teams including RadioShack last season, and Stephanie McIlvain, who is an Oakley sunglasses representative who worked closely with Armstrong.

Miller remarked that he does not think that Popovych knows anything about what the grand jury is investigating.

Bolt feels saddened by news of positive tests

Usain Bolt recently expressed his shock after hearing the news about five Jamaican athletes failing to clear a test for banned substances.

The triple world record holder, Usain Bolt, who won the 100m in 9.91sec in the London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace, said the positive drug test are backward steps for the sport.

From Guardian.co.uk:

A spokesman for the World Anti-Doping Authority (WADA) said they could not get involved yet, although Jamaica’s prime minister Bruce Golding has called an emergency meeting to address the situation. “Announcements relating to doping controls fall under the responsibilities of the organization in charge of results management of the relevant case.”

The most recent Jamaican athlete to have tested positive was Julien Dunkley, who was dropped from the Olympic team after Boldenone was found in a sample taken at the national trials in 2008. He is serving a two-year ban. Others to have tested positive for performance enhancing drugs include the sprinters Merlene Ottey and Patrick Jarrett. Jarrett was suspended for two years, but Ottey escaped a ban as her ‘B’ sample was returned negative. Earlier this month Bolt lamented that Jamaica did not have the finances to implement a world-class drugs testing regime. “I get tested a lot but we just do not get the facilities in Jamaica to do so much testing like in big countries such as the US,” he said.

Though the five athletes have yet to be named, it is believed that two of the five trace their roots to the Racers Track Club, the same club as Bolt, and are coached by Glen Mills.

New target for tailored antibiotics identified

A promising target to a new class of antibiotics has been discovered by Technische Universität München (TUM) researchers.

The finding is believed to have implications to provide crucial insights for handling bacterial stems that develop resistance to previously considered life-saving antibiotics.

From Sciencedaily.com:

The cells of virtually all life forms synthesize essential natural substances belonging to the class of terpenes and steroids from the small isoprene building blocks dimethylallyl pyrophosphate (DMAPP) and isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP). Mammals and a large number of other organisms generate these essential metabolites via the so-called mevalonate pathway. But most human pathogens, including Plasmodium falciparum, have developed an alternate mechanism for producing these important substances. Now, this special pathway may spell doom for those bacteria. The TUM researchers have unraveled the structural basis of the terminal step in bacterial isoprene synthesis. The crucial enzyme has a most unusual structure, similar to a three-leaf clover, and may open a forceful line of attack for custom-tailored antibiotics.

The results were presented in an issue of the chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie.

Supply of progesterone can improve outcomes of TBI

Providing progesterone to patients treated for traumatic brain injuries (TBI), shortly after the injury, can reduce the risk of death and degree of disability, as per researchers from the Emory University.

The study revealed that treatment involving progesterone for brain injuries is safe and extensively studied on animals for more than 15 years.

From News-medical.net:

As the results were so impressive, the research team felt it was time to take the treatment to the bedside for testing in patients who had suffered a serious brain injury.

It is estimated that 1.5 to 2 million people in the U.S. sustain a TBI each year, leading to 50,000 deaths and 80,000 new cases of long-term disability.

It is also a major cause of death and disability among children and military personnel.

Despite the enormity of the problem, scientists have failed to identify effective medications to improve outcomes following a TBI and no new medical therapies have been developed for traumatic brain injuries in over 30 years.

Although it is classed as a “sex steroid,” progesterone is also a neurosteroid that exerts protective effects on human tissue.

It is naturally present in small but measurable amounts in the brains of males and females.

The research was published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine.

Final steroid test in waiting for senate seat

Media and baseball fans have entered into an anguished debate in relation to use of drugs in sports ever since Barry Bonds entered a San Francisco courthouse to testify about the use of drugs by him.

Linda McMahon who has been accused of doing little to nothing to curb steroid use is hoping that she will be a successful candidate for the senate bid as public has appointed users of anabolic steroids and performance enhancing drugs such as Jesse Ventura and Arnold Schwarzenegger as governors.

From Cbssports.com:

But because wrestling is not taken as seriously as baseball or football, oversight of its health hazards has been relatively low profile. Congressional investigators interviewed representatives of pro wrestling after they staged the Mark McGwire-Sammy Sosa-Jose Canseco extravaganza. The wrestling inquiry took place behind the scenes, off camera. No one in the WWE had stolen Roger Maris’ place in history or cheapened 500 career home runs. So a public hearing was deemed unnecessary.

But while Congress criminalized steroid possession without a prescription 20 years ago, it still hasn’t made a move on corked bats or Gaylord Perry. The cheating element of PEDs wouldn’t matter so much if not for associated health risks.

In choosing their nominee, Connecticut Republicans discounted a scathing Hartford Courant editorial written by the father of the late wrestling star Chris Benoit, who killed himself, his wife and 7-year-old son in 2007. Michael Benoit attributed the murder-suicide to brain trauma detected in his son during postmortem testing. (There was also evidence of steroid use.) He blamed the McMahons for demanding excessively dangerous stunts in the ring.

The world of baseball is today full of speculations as to whether or not two “cheaters”, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, will be excluded by the Hall of Fame voters for making use of anabolic steroids and performance enhancing drugs.

Clenbuterol – Most Successful Performance enhancer

Clenbuterol, also known as Clenbuteral and Spiropent, is one of the most successful performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) of all times. Originally developed as a bronchodilator, Clenbuterol started gaining immense popularity as an effective weight loss drug. Since use of Clen does not lead to side effects unless abused or of low grade, its users can expect nothing less than complete perfection and satisfaction after buying Clenbuterol online without a prescription.

Clenbuterol or Clen is an anti-catabolic anabolic by its very nature and is second to none to boost performance and lose extra body weight in as short as 3-6 weeks. The best part about Clen is that weight loss attained with it does not result in loss of muscle mass and muscle size. This drug also helps in enhancing aerobic abilities and improving oxygenated blood transportation, resulting in solid muscle mass development. This selective Beta-2-symphatonimetric agonist is available online in varying forms such as injections, tablets, and syrups. Clenbuterol offers an active life of nearly 35-40 hours and can be detected over a period of 2-3 months.

The chemical name of Clenbuterol is -Amino-alpha-[(tert-butylamino)methyl]-3,5-dichlorobenzyl alcohol Monohydrochloride and its molecular formula is C12H18 CI2N2O. This pre-contest, cutting cycle drug is most effective when used in daily doses of 100-140 mcg by men and 50-100 mcg by women. It is always recommended to seek medical advice and buy Clenbuterol online from a reliable seller as Clen abuse can result in health complications such as limb tremor, tachycardia, excessive sweating, nausea, palpitation, and insomnia.

London 2012 Job offer to Marinov withdrawn

The job offered to Sevdalin Marinov, the former Olympic champion, has been withdrawn by organizers of the London 2012 Olympics.

The former champion was offered the job of technical operations manager for weightlifting despite testing positive for steroids in 1997.

From News.bbc.co.uk:

A statement said: “When the offer came to the attention of LOCOG’s senior management, we decided that this was not an appropriate appointment.”

Marinov, 42, was due to start his new job on 20 September.

After winning gold at the Seoul Olympics in 1988, Marinov migrated to Australia and enjoyed success in his adopted country.

But in 1994 he tested positive for steroids and was banned from competition for two years.

He was coaching Australia’s junior team in 2003 when a drugs raid at his home discovered almost 15kg of the steroid stanozolol belonging to his housemate Keith Murphy.

Marinov, who was out of the country at the time, successfully overturned the life ban imposed by the International Weightlifting Federation, arguing he had no knowledge of Murphy’s drug activities.

Employment offer to Mr Marinov has been withdrawn along with an apology, according to a LOCOG statement.

Australian scientist charged for purchasing online steroids

Scientist John Pryor, of the Sydney Academy of Sport, has come under the scanner for illegally importing steroids ordered over the internet.

The scientist faces up to five years in jail and fines of up to A$100,000 ($58,700) if found guilty.

From News.bbc.co.uk:

Customs officials intercepted a parcel addressed to Mr Pryor, which contained DHEA, or dehydrohepiandrosterone.

The testosterone-based drug is illegal in Australia and is on the International Olympic Committee’s list of banned substances.

But it is sold over the counter in the United States.

The academy has suspended Mr Pryor, a strength and speed specialist, pending the outcome of the police investigation.

The academy’s director-general, Brendan O’Reilly, said the drugs had been ordered over the internet.

According to officials from the Australian customs, Pryor would appear in court on 9 May on two counts of importing banned steroids.

Teens on steroids and sports

Involvement in sports with real or perceived weight specifications is commonly linked with steroid use among teens and unhealthy weight control behaviors, as per researchers at the University of Minnesota.

The link between weight-centered sporting events and unhealthy weight control approaches is concerning, as per Marla Eisenberg, Sc.D., M.P.H., assistant professor at the University Of Minnesota Medical School, Department Of Pediatrics.

From Sciencedaily.com:

“It is encouraging to see that the majority of young people who reported using steroids in 1999 stopped using them as they got older,” said Patricia van den Berg, Ph.D., lead author of the study from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. “But even given this decline, between one and three in 100 teens still reported using steroids within the last year when asked again 5 years later.”

Researchers conducted the longitudinal study with more than 2,000 adolescents to examine changes in eating patterns, weight, physical activity, and related factors over five years. Participants completed two surveys, one in 1999 and one in 2004, to determine if there were changes in steroid use.

Overall, 1.7 percent of boys and 1.4 percent of girls between the ages of 15 and 23 reported steroid use in 2004. Those that reported use early on were 4 to 10 times more likely to use later in life.

More and more teens are making use of anabolic androgenic steroids, which can be classified as synthetic derivatives of the male hormone, testosterone, for improving performance, body strength, lean appearance, and stamina.
