Identification of reasons behind bone complications with cystic fibrosis

The cause behind bone problems that generally accompany cystic fibrosis was traced to genetic reasons, according to a recent study by Dr Christina Haston, a researcher of the McGill University Health Centre research Institute.

This research article was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. The study suggested that bone frailty is caused by genetic reasons.

From Sciencedaily.com:

The medical community generally considers the bone fragility associated with cystic fibrosis to be multifactorial. It is thought to be a consequence of the mutation of the Cftr gene, the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis, of the pancreatic disease associated with cystic fibrosis and of the treatment with steroids to facilitate breathing.

The study showed that mice with a Cftr gene mutation have a bone mineral density and bone mass that are significantly lower than those of control mice. This difference occurs without the pancreatic insufficiency seen clinically and in the absence of steroid treatment.

This conclusion clearly defines cystic-fibrosis-related bone problems as an additional pathology stemming from the Cftr mutation and not as a side effect of treatment. This may have some therapeutic consequences as it opens an avenue for defining a targeted treatment in mice.

The study was funded by the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, Valorisation Recherche Quebec, and the Fonds de la Recherche en Santé du Québec.

Perjury charges against Clemens revisited

The lawyer hired by Roger Clemens to defend himself from claims that he used steroids, Rusty Hardin, recently said that he is keen to hear what Brian McNamee has to say while appearing before the Washington, D.C., grand jury investigating Roger Clemens for perjury.

The completely turnaround behavior of Clemens‘ attorney after he called McNamee “a colossal liar” after the Mitchell report was released two-and-a-half years ago is strange for many.

From NYdailynews.com:

The Washington grand jury that is investigating whether Clemens lied in 2008 when he told a congressional panel that he had never used steroids has been especially active in recent weeks, a sign that the 27-month probe might be at a crossroads.

The questioning of the witnesses who’ve appeared in recent weeks seems to have centered on the bloody gauze, vials and needles that McNamee claimed contained steroids and Clemens’ DNA. McNamee kept that evidence in a FedEx box in a closet for years, and turned it over to investigators shortly after the probe began.

McNamee is believed to have told other people about the existence of the waste long before he met with former Sen. George Mitchell, the author of Major League Baseball’s Mitchell Report on steroids, released in December of 2007. Congress asked the Department of Justice to investigate whether Clemens perjured himself after he told lawmakers conducting a hearing on Mitchell’s report two months later that he never used performance-enhancing drugs.

It is worth noting here that the Congress asked the Department of Justice to identify if Clemens perjured himself after disposing before the lawmakers that he never used performance enhancing drugs.

Hatch Bill to target steroid-loaded supplements

Food inspectors will be working with drug enforcement agents to identify dietary supplements spiked with steroids, under a new legislation unveiled recently by Sen. Orrin Hatch.

The bill, co-sponsored with Democratic Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin, is in a response to a campaign by the major sports leagues and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

From Sltrib.com:

Travis Tygart, the CEO of the Anti-Doping Agency, called the bill “a great step forward.” He said he’s glad the senators recognized the need for legislation to fill in the gaps in the law and help protect consumers.

For months, the Anti-Doping Agency has argued that it’s too easy for dishonest supplement makers to slip steroids into their products and get away with it. They asked McCain to sponsor legislation that would require supplement makers to provide proof that their products were safe. Companies would also have had to hand over any customer complaint to the government.

Hatch, one of the biggest supporters of supplements in Congress, protested, saying McCain’s bill would increase costs to make supplements and reduce their availability to the public.

McCain, Hatch and their co-sponsors struck an agreement around four issues.

They agreed to increase cooperation between the DEA and the Food and Drug Administration, while also requiring the FDA to speed up rules on what constitutes a new dietary ingredient and any tests to determine its safety.

Those two items are part of the new Hatch-Harkin legislation.

Dietary supplement industry associations and players’ associations for Major League Baseball and the National Football League are supporting the new bill, as per Hatch’s office.

Drugs common with Poker players to improve performance

Drugs common with Poker players to improve performanceAccording to a study by the Nova Southeastern University that was recently presented at a national conference, 80 percent of poker players in the world reported using drugs and other products for improving their performance in poker.

These drugs help the players to stay awake for long and concentrate better offering them a competitive advantage, as per Kevin Clauson, Pharm.D., an associate professor at NSU’s College of Pharmacy, who was the principle investigator in the study.

From Newswise.com:

Poker players are using drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, Valium, and other prescription medications, as well as substances including caffeine, energy drinks and guarana to get an edge over their opponents.

“The use these substances could allow poker players to stay awake longer, as well as focus and concentrate better, which would be a competitive advantage,” said Kevin Clauson, Pharm.D., an associate professor at NSU’s College of Pharmacy, who was the principle investigator in the study. “Stamina is important for any poker player because tournament poker and cash games can go on for many hours.”

Using these substances can be harmful for poker players, Clauson said. Depending on the type of substance, he pointed out; there will likely be short-term and long-term side effects.

The Nova Southeastern University researchers initially interviewed players in Las Vegas during the World Series of Poker and then surveyed online players from across the globe.

Congress will not be pursuing perjury charges against Sosa

Congress will not be pursuing perjury charges against SosaFormer Major League slugger Sammy Sosa will not be facing an investigation for perjury, as per The Associated Press.

The Associated Press reported that the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform reported that the panel will not have the Justice Department look into whether Sosa lied during a March 2005 hearing before the Congress.

From mlb.mlb.com:

After Sosa’s name was revealed last June to reportedly be on a list of baseball players who allegedly failed drug tests in 2003, the chairman of the committee said he would look into possibly investigating Sosa for perjury, The AP wrote.

“After a review of the matter, we will not be taking any action,” committee spokeswoman Jenny Thalheimer Rosenberg told The AP.

According to the report, the committee might have been swayed toward not proceeding because of a five-year statute of limitations in such perjury cases with a deadline to press charges that expired in March.

That means Sosa, who hit 609 home runs over 18 big league seasons, will not face the same type of investigation currently surrounding former pitcher Roger Clemens, who told Congress in 2008 that he had not used steroids or human growth hormone and later had his testimony contradicted by Brian McNamee, his former personal trainer.

Committee spokeswoman Jenny Thalheimer Rosenberg told The AP that Sosa will not be facing any action.

COPD exacerbations possible of being reduced by Macrolide antibiotic

COPD exacerbations possible of being reduced by Macrolide antibioticPatients with moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can experience reductions in frequency of exacerbations by as much as 35 percent by using a macrolide antibiotic in the long term, as per a London-based study.

Results of the study suggest that there is a significant effect of low-dose macrolide therapy on the frequency of exacerbation, and severity with moderate to severe COPD, according to lead author of the paper, Terence A. R. Seemungal, Ph.D., and Jadwiga Wedzicha, M.D., principle investigator.

From News-Medical.Net:

While their findings are encouraging, Dr. Seemungal points out that they must be put in context with future findings. Furthermore, the threat of growing antibiotic resistance resulting from widespread prophylactic use of erythromycin is not a trivial concern. “In this scenario, substantial, widespread emergence of macrolide bacterial resistance is virtually foreordained, with attendant reduction in the antimicrobial usefulness of this drug class,” wrote Ken M. Kunisaki, M.D. and Denise E. Niewoehner, M.D., of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis, in the accompanying editorial. “Balancing benefit against harm could pose a dilemma for which there might be no clear answers.”

Moreover, not all of the study patients were treated with guideline-recommended therapy, such as inhaled corticosteroids or inhaled long-acting bronchodilators, which have been shown to decrease exacerbation frequency. The degree of added benefit of erythromycin over and above standard therapy will require further study.

“Observations that any intervention might decrease the frequency and severity of acute exacerbations in COPD present considerable public health implications,” observed John Heffner, M.D., past president of the ATS. “Exacerbations occur about once a year among patients with moderate to severe COPD and account for more than $30 billion dollars in direct and indirect costs annually in the United States alone.”

The study results were published in the first issue for December of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, which is published by the American Thoracic Society.

Vitamin supplement can help in treating resistant asthma

Vitamin supplement can help in treating resistant asthmaAsthmatic patients who are resistant to steroids tend to witness repeated asthma attacks and the risks of death are greater for such patients.

However, vitamin D3 has been found to substantially improve the responsiveness of these patients to steroid treatment in order to provide improvement hopes to the patients according to researchers from King’s College London.

From Sciencedaily.com:

Asthma is usually treated very effectively with inhaled steroids but for some patients, taking steroid tablets is the only way of controlling their condition, and this can cause considerable side effects. Unfortunately a sub-group of people with severe asthma fail to show clinical improvement, even with high doses of oral steroids, limiting their treatment options.

Professor Tak Lee, Director of the MRC-Asthma UK Centre in Allergic Mechanisms of Asthma at King’s College London and Imperial College, who was involved in the latest study, explained its importance: ‘This research is really exciting and points the direction towards potential new strategies for reversing steroid resistance. This has major implications for how to treat patients with severe asthma and could also substantially reduce the use of NHS resources.’

Dr. Lyn Smurthwaite, Research Development Manager at Asthma UK said this research opens up a potentially important new avenue for developing treatment options for individuals finding it hard to control asthma.
